Route 62 - off-farm activities in the vicinity
Montagu is an historical town with many beautifully preserved examples of early Cape architecture and is just 24 kms from our farm. It is also unique in that vineyards and orchards grow right in the town. There are a number of very good restaurants and you will find menus in your cottage. There are also regular markets, music events and other activities in the town - ask us and we will let you know if anything special is on during your stay.
Robertson is a very vibey town just 50 km from our farm with some wonderful restaurants and eclectic little shops to cater for a variety of interests. The Robertson and Bonnievale areas are also surrounded by numerous world-famous wine estates and following the wine routes here is a great way to while away the day… or two.
McGregor is a popular destination for visitors because of its remote location and old world charm and is only 20 km from Robertson (and 70 km from our farm). It is a beautiful little village that is tranquil and restful and will take you back to what life might have been like many decades ago. There are some good restaurants and regular festivals in the town that you might be interested in attending.
Barrydale is a little further along the R62 but is worth a visit for an early breakfast or a lazy lunch at one of the multitude of great restaurants in the town. A stroll through the village is also a must for those who appreciate and are inspired by authentic architecture. The spectacular Tradouw's pass is also found just outside the town on the road to Swellendam and is well worth a short round trip.
Protea Farm Tractor Ride
The Tractor Ride up to the summit of the Langeberg is a long time favourite of visitors and locals alike. Look out for your cottage, which can be seen from the ride. Afterwards stay for the potjiekos, cooked on open fires in the forest, which is delicious and great value for money.
Avalon Hot Springs
Avalon Hot Springs resort offers hours of fun and relaxation and you can benefit from the healing powers of the springs which are amongst the most pure of any in the world.
Game viewing at one of our local game reserves (you can even view the Big 5!), or nature drives are available with an experienced game ranger, knowledge-able about the area.
